Duwamish Head Race—Southern Sound Series
Southern Sound Series
The Southern Sound Series is a series of four races sponsored by a number of South Puget Sound yacht clubs. A sponsoring club conducts each race. Series responsibilities (coordination, publicity, scoring, trophies, etc.) are shared on a rotating basis between the clubs. The five sponsoring clubs signed a Letter of Agreement for the Conduct of the Southern Sound Series in the fall of 1979. Visit Southern Sound Series website for more information. We encourage everyone to participate in all the races.
The Southern Sound Series races are:
Winter Vashon Island Race - Tacoma Yacht Club
Duwamish Head Race - Three Tree Point Yacht Club January 9, 2010
Toliva Shoals Race - Olympia Yacht Club/South Sound Sailing Society February 13, 2010

Starting Sequence
This statement is not meant to replace the Sailing Instruction or RRS 26 but to define the actions of the Race Committee within the rule:
Race Committee Time will be Universal Pacific Standard/GPS Time. All times should be taken from visual signals. Visual signals will be accompanied with a sound signal as follows: All Warnings and Starts will be made on the 5 minute with a gun and all intermediate signals will be made with a horn. Preparatory up 1 short horn, Preparatory down 1 long horn. The sequence will not be changed without a Postponement or General Recall. Postponement and General Recall will be made with a horn.
If a sound signal fails the visual signal prevails.
All Count Down, Class Starts, Postponements, Over Early and General Recall
will be announced via VHF 72 as an unofficial means of communication for the start.Course
Start in a northerly direction between an offshore orange mark and the RC flag on the Des Moines Marina fishing pier, leaving the green navigation buoy to starboard. Leave Duwamish Head Light and Blakely Rock Light to port. Finish in a southerly direction between offshore orange mark and the RC flag on the end of the fishing pier with the green navigation buoy to port.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The green buoy is a limit mark; Do NOT sail between the pier and the green navigation buoy during the start or finish.Protests

Please note that our series races will be PIYA Catagory III. You can obtain a copy of this by going to their web site www.ussailing.net/piya/ or linking here. This is a check list of the minimum equipment a boat should have for safe racing on Puget Sound. Basically for Catagory III it is very close to what the Coast Guard requirements are.
We hope to see more newcomers come out and race in the Cruising Class. You don’t need new high tech sails, a perfect bottom or remove all that spare gear. Race NFS (No Spinnaker so crew size is small). Come out and meet your fellow sailors and have fun.
If you think you may enjoy becoming a crew member, we have boats looking for crew.
