UK Halsey Rules for Sail Racing Quiz Vic-Maui 2010 Announcement PDF

Racing -TTPYC conducts an active sailboat race program and members participate in all major areas races. The Club is a member of the United States Sailing Association, the U.S. National Sailing Authority and PHRF-NW, the local performance handicapping association. There is plenty of racing opportunity at all levels of experience, for both skipper and crew, on local races and in larger area racing on the Puget Sound and British Columbia. The major local race is the Duwamish Head Race, part of a four race series conducted by Southern Sound Yacht Clubs. There is also a three-race Windjammer Series. Single-handed and couples races, five "around the can" series from early Spring to late Fall are available to participate in. The Spring Regatta, is an April event. The Mid-Sound Summer Social is sponsored by Three Tree Point Yacht Club and the Des Moines Marina.

Entry at any level of experience is invited, and friendly competition is fostered to encourage all to participate, from novice to "Old Salt"!

Jack & Jill Race Results 2009
I would like to thank Vannesa, Greg and Alex Zaputil for taking on the Jack and Jill Race.
It was also nice to see Escape out.

The Jack & Jill Race was held on June 13, 2009. After checking the race board at 09:00 for any changes / ammendments, a brief skipper's meeting followed where race courses and starting sequence was discussed. A nice 6 – 8 knot southerly had filled prior to the start and held steady long enough to run 2 races. Afterwards, the boats in attendance continued on to “C” dock for a fun apres race dock party. Thanks to Race Committee Alex & George. A great time was had by all!

Alex and George did a great job as Race Committee  Escapade- ZZZapp's Contender

We call this Summer Series for a reason and that's because the brochure shows sunshine and 15 knot northerlies. That's exactly what we had last night and it was fun to be out on the water. It was also family night with Snake Eyes "The Family Cruiser" out with their extended family, Scott Wilson, on the helm. And ZZZAP, the ultimate family cruiser with Greg, Vanessa and Alex showing some great speed for the first race of their season.

It was great to see Scott back out. It has got to be a year or more since I've seen him. I got a chance to talk to him in the bar and he and Sylvia have purchased a road bike and have been doing a lot of riding with a local group.

I would like to thank Paul Jones and Phil Chin for a great race last night. We were whizzing around on Liberte' so much before the race I didn't get to see who all was out on the Committee Boat but great job. By the way, it was Phil Chin's birthday yesterday. Happy Birthday Phil! 39 again?

We had 3 boats racing Swiftsure over the Memorial Day weekend and I would like to congratulate Pat Stewart and the crew of Cherokee for a first in their class and David Garman and Debra Lowell and the crew of Giant Slayer for a first place in their class. Great job you guys!

The NOOD Regatta was held in Seattle on May 15, 16 and 17. The weather was great but unfortunately the wind was very light. Three Tree Point was well represented with Pat Water's Liberte' getting a third in the C&C 115 class, Stuart Burnell and the crew of Tantivy with a second in the J109 class and David Garman and Debra Lowell getting a second place in the very well attended San Juan 21 class.

Eli Tollin, Mike Stainsby, Jim Redmond, Stuart Burnell, Bill and Penny Walton and a number of good friends and I are heading up to Canada next week to compete in the Van Isle 360. This 545 mile circumnavigation of Vancouver Island has probably become the premier sailing event in the Pacific Northwest. Eli, Mike and I will be sailing on Night Runner and Jim and Stuart will be sailing on Jim Lowery's new C&C 115, Zorra. Bill and Penny are planning to cruise up the inside of Vancouver Island to help the Race Committee in a couple of races and be part of the fun. If you would like to keep an eye on the progress go to www.vanisle360.com .

I hope the Summer Series continues with the same great racing we have had in the first two races. Don't forget that there will be a dock party at guest moorage after the last race of the series on June 18th. The rumor is that there will be some barbecue salmon there. Oh, don't forget the Minto Mingle and Dingy Thingy on the 20th and 21st.

Have fun and we will swap stories when I get back from Canada.

UK-Halsey Sailmakers Rules Gadget
taken from 48* North June, 2009

"UK-Halsey Sailmakers continues to pioneer ways to help sailors master the racing rules and their latest tool is a Google Gadget that can be placed on virtually any website and links instantly to a bundle of 5 animated rules quizzes. Thse show developing race course situations and explain the rules that apply - an incredibly simple yet powerful way to learn and understand. And UK-Halsey is providing their Ruldes Gadget at no charge to anyone with a website.

Once installed, UK-Halsey can remotely refrest the animations package, replacing the five rules situations with new material automatically, keeping come-back interest high. The rules analysis for each situation has been developed by Rob Overton, who was recently appointed Chairman of US Sailing's Racing Rules Committee, effectively the chief rules writer for the United States; so the reliablity of his wise advice is above any challenge."

This has been posted to your racing blog- Have fun testing yourself!

Tom's Race Reports

June 24, 2009
good to be back from the Van Isle. I'm happy that the boats with TTPYC members aboard did very well. Doug Fryer's Night Runner with Mike Stainsby, Eli Tollin, Tom Davis and former member Frank Shriver won 1st place overall in Div. 2. Jim Lowry's C&C 115, Zorra, with Jim Redmond and several former Farr-ari crew took 3rd overall in Div.3. There was some very close racing on one of the mot beautiful and possibly one of the most challenging race courses on the west coast. If you are interested in the run down of the race with some excellent pictures go to the web site at www.vanisle360.com .

Looking at the results for the races in the Summer Series that I missed, it looked like you had some fairly light winds but nice weather. Congratulations to John Hoag and his crew on Snake Eyes for their first in PHRF and Steve Sisson and his crew on Hobbes for their first place in the Cruising Class.

And thanks to Paul Jones and all of you that helped on running the 2009 Summer Series.

June 24th- Start of the last Summer Series Race

May 8, 2009
Spring Series finished with a wonderful evening of racing and a well attended barbeque and trophy presentation.

I would like to start out by thanking our Race Committee for a great job. Bill Walton and Dave Klein were the core of the committee with help from Donna Beau, Gayle Stahl and Sandy Lewis. They set some very good courses with wind conditions which ranged from two to nineteen knots of wind.

Last night the wind was steady with twelve plus knots at the start and building to over sixteen knots for the return run from Point Robinson but as the sun started to set the wind began backing out as the fleet approached the finish. The lead boats were able to sail the course in under an hour and everyone was in before 8:00. This allowed for a good crowd to come down to the guest dock for burgers and beer.

Three different boats were able to get first place in at least one race but Chinook was dominant with three firsts and a third place to take the series. It’s amazing what a clean bottom will do. Congratulations to Dean and Shelly and the crew. It was nice to see them out. It reminded me of old times.

We had two Cruisers out for the series but both elected to race with the PHRF boats. Both sailed very well so the Race Committee decided to give a trophy for the best series score for the two of them and Rick Redfield and his crew on Last Tuesday won the Cruising class. Congratulations Rick. I was great having you and Peter, Amy and the family out.

Thanks to everyone who came out and raced. The competition was great and the racing was fun and thank you everyone who helped with the burgers and beer.

DON’T FORGET SUMMER SERIES STARTS ON THURSDAY May 14, 2009. YOU CAN GET AN ENTRY FORM AND SIGNUP AT THE TTPYC WEB SITE.

Paul Jones will head the Race Committee again this year. He and his group always puts on a good series. Come out and join the fun!

May 1, 2009
Beautiful evening for sailing. Still a little cool but steady wind from 8 to 12 knots and plenty of tidal current. The Race Committee made a good call shutting the course down at "I" Mark the second time through. The wind quit right after the sun set and it was a beautiful sunset.

Chinook sailed a great race and now is sitting in first place going into the last race of the series.

Next Thursday will be the last race of the Spring Series so we will finish it off with some burgers down at guest moorage and we will present trophies for the series. Hope you all can make it.

April 22, 2009 Spring Series #3

Okay, I'm late. I took advantage of the great weather with some sailing all weekend and some golf on Monday. I'm sure that I'm not just speaking for myself when I say that I have been waiting for some sunshine and warmth. I hope you all got to enjoy the great weather and here’s a wish for a lot more.

Thursday evening was another light air race but it was a good light air race. Even though there was very little evidence of wind on the water there was a steady 3 or more knots all evening.

The Race Committee set a good 2.3 mile course and most everyone got around before 8:00.

We had a different winner for the 3rd time in 3 races. Congratulations to Steve Miller and his crew on Abracadabra for their win. The top 3 boats are within 1 point of each other going into the 4 th race. This will make for some good competition for the last 2 races of the series.

Remember there is no racing this Thursday the 22nd so come out for the Regatta this weekend. Thursday racing resumes on the 30th.

April 13, 2009 Spring Series #2

Sorry about the delay. The winter cold finally found me.

Spring Series #2 was a light air race with a chance for everyone to say that they had the lead for a short time at some point of the race.

It looked like Abracadabra was going to run away with a big lead at “K” Mark the first time through. It was short lived as a hole developed between “K” and “L” Marks and a breeze filled in a little farther out toward the middle. It was a re-shuffle of the fleet as they approached “L” Mark.

The Committee Boat moved from the starting area up to “L” Mark giving the impression that they may shorten course. There was no signal so there was a scramble to get spinnakers down and head sails up to continue the course back to the finish. This, then, re-shuffled the fleet again as everyone worked to weather in very light air.

Gordon Kells-Murphy and his crew on Les Chevauv Blancs was able to find the right combination to get the gun.

I would like to welcome Peter and Amy Gelinas and their family who came out and joined us for the rest of the series. They came out to be part of the Cruising Class but with only one other boat (Last Tuesday) and them, they opted to race with the rest of the boats for this series. When I talked with Peter and Rick, both of them said that they were out to have a good time and it is kind of fun to see how they would do with the “racers”.

Thanks to Bill Walton and Dave Kline for putting on another fun race.

April 3, 2009
First of all I would like to invite everyone to the 2009 Spring Regatta.

Spring Series #1

Woo, that was one wet race. We got out on the course about ten after six and it was raining with very light wind. This was a chance to put up the new drifter and see what it looked like. The sail maker assured me that the sail was good from -3 to 5 knots true. We got it up and it started pulling real well with 1 knot of wind. Cool! I asked Mark how it looked and he said it looked great. It is white so I asked Mark what it was made of and he said white garbage bags. It works.

The good news was that the wind filled in for a nice little race for the 1st race of the series. Bill Walton and the crew (Dave Klein) took pity on us and kept it short. Everyone was off the course by 7:15 and in the bar by 7:20.

Dean Conti and crew on Chinook took a convincing 1 st place. It’s amazing what a clean bottom does!

Everyone was scored as one class. We have a number of boats that are doing spring maintenance so I hope to see more people out next week. We may be able to break it into two classes then.

This is a check list of the minimum equipment a boat should have for safe racing on Puget Sound. Basically for Catagory III it is very close to what the Coast Guard requirements are.

We hope to see more newcomers come out and race in the Cruising Class. You don’t need new high tech sails, a perfect bottom or remove all that spare gear. Race NFS (No Spinnaker so crew size is small). Come out and meet your fellow sailors and have fun.

If you think you may enjoy becoming a crew member, we have boats looking for crew.
